The Eye Of The World

I was poking around our family library at home and I was surprised to find a novel I never saw at all after all these years. It had some discoloration in the paper so I knew it's been around for a while and not a newly bought book. I'm talking about our copy of The Eye Of the World by the famous fantasy author Robert Jordan. I consider fantasy my favorite genre of books. I don't read many books but fantasy is pretty much all I enjoy reading. While I've read the likes of the Harry Potter series, The Hobbit, Chronicles of Narnia and a few others I never really read the thick lengthy fantasy novels like Lord of The Rings, The Shannara books of Terry Brooks and the books of Robert Jordan. For some reason, this surprising find of The Eye of the World has given me interest to finally attempt to read it. Maybe by reading it I will gain the interest to read those other lengthy fantasy novels sitting around in our library. Wish me luck!

Frost Mage Fun

I just logged into my World of Warcraft account management page in the WoW website and it says it's frozen and my last login was September 25, 2006. I miss playing that game already since I just came from a 5 month long vacation from the game then I found out I had to quit once more due to vision problems. One of the cool things I did when I played with my guild during the time I came back was to do Molten Core and come up with this screen shot. I play a frost mage on the Bronzebeard server. We frost mages agreed to have some fun during the Garr fight where we all purposely go near the last small earth elemental thingie when it explodes so we all go flying through the air and then ice block. It's quite a sight as shown below! It's definitely one of the fun moments with my guild and I really hope to get back soon especially with the expansion coming January 16 next year.

How Did I Find Casino Royale?

I watched Casino Royale the other day and it felt a bit different from other Bond movies I've watched. Without criticizing the movie for its details and watching it simply for the sake of watching, I found it entertaining. It had a lot of action scenes and some touches of humor. I'm also glad that the role of the Bond girl has evolved into an integral part of the story and has a real involvement with the progression of it. Watching the early Bonds, it was annoying to see the Bond girl as merely a pretty face a la Ursula Andress strolling across the beach. Keeping in mind that Casino Royale was ian Fleming's first book and that it's supposed to the prequel to the Bond stories we know, a lot of inconsistencies were bugging me all throughout the film. 1. It's the first Bond story but the movie Casino Royale had modern day technology that was unseen during the early Bond days. This one is a bit understandable though since it would be really sucky to see a movie without cool technology nowadays. 2. The role of M was not always Judi Dench's. In fact ever since the start until he dies in 1981, M was played by a man named Bernard Lee. In fact in Golden Eye (Brosnan's first Bond movie), Judi Dench makes a reference to her predecessor in a conversation with Bond. This I assume is Bernard Lee's character. Being the first assignment of Bond, it should have been Bernard Lee's character that should have been in Casino Royale, hence they should have gotten a man for their M, not Dench. I'm thinking maybe Anthony Hopkins or *snicker* Sean Connery lol. Seeing as Bond was still much younger in Casino Royale, Daniel Craig was a good choice to play the most athletic Bond I've ever seen. It's a bit strange to see Bond running around and beating people up like a bruiser. It felt like I was watching a Vin Diesel movie. Overall though the movie was fun.

I happened to be channel surfing last night while watching TV saw that the Maury Povich show was on. It wasn't the usual Paternity tests episodes with the "You are not the father!" so I decided to check out what was going on. It so happened that Maury was featuring some famous online videos (all of which, fo some reason, I never heard of or seen before). This particular video of knock knock jokes made me laugh my ass off. b5media.com got a face lift!

b5media.com has a new look and I'm loving it! It looks a lot more fresh and clean. Rather than being a just a blog to post announcement and thoughts from the founders and the rest of the management team, it's now serving a cooler purpose of being a portal to the b5 blogs. You can choose which channel to drop down now rather than scrolling down to the channel and blog of your choice. The site also features a random channel each time you visit. Like the sloganizer at my sidebar, you can refresh the site and a new channel will be featured. With b5 growing into one of the biggest blog networks around and the 2 million dollar VC funding it just got, everyone in b5 is very excited with all the changes. A new b5 deserves a fresh new look!

Low Vision Blog

I mentioned before that I had to quit playing World of Warcraft because my eye condition called Keratoconus. I've had it for more than 5 years already but I wore special lenses back then. Ever since my opthalmologist prdered me to stop wearing them I've been living in a blur but thankfully I can see well enough (actually... just barely) to use to PC to write stuff. i have to stick my face closer to the monitor than I normally should but it's the only way I can get to see what I'm reading and writing. Since I already write for b5media's NBA Obsessed, I've been thinking that I could probably write a blog all about low vision written from the perspective of someone actually experiencing it, living the low vision life. That way it's more personal and while I also have to write about the science news and technology about low vision (which includes other low vision conditions like cataracts and stuff), I also get to write about my experiences. It's probably not going to be up for a few more weeks but that's the plan.

Video Game Economics

I have played enough video games to say this one thing, the economics of video games are very unrealistic. Of course, I don't expect it to be too realistic since the variables that affect our economy are too many and too complex to be simplified into something that could be programmed into a game. What I am saying is that the economics in video games should be at least sound in terms of basics like the law of supply and demand and factors of production (labor and capital). How realistic is this? You play World of Warcraft and pick up an expensive piece of armor that you don't want to use. First instinct would be to sell it. Every time you try to sell a merchant something, he/she automatically buys it. You earn money!. Questions that you might ponder about: Did he/she really want that? Everything in the game seemes to be perfectly inelastic and so highly demanded that merchants would buy anything and everything that sell them. Sometimes you wonder why a weapons merchant would buy a peice of armor. Did he/she have the capital to buy that? These merchant never run out of money to pay you for stuff you sell them. In a real life situation, when a merchant goes into a buying spree most likely he/she will lose money. This will force the merchant to raise prices to make up for lost profits. You don't see this happening because the merchant doesn't lose money from buying too much of your stuff. How unrealistic! Imported from The Babbling Introvert v 1.0

I'm sure everyone has a celebrity crush even if they have a boyfriend or girlfriend. It's that celebrity you just think is attractive and that's all. Nothing wrong with admiring the beuty of God's creation. Ever since I first saw that hit Disney made for TV movie High School Musical and saw Vanessa Anne Hudgens, I thought to myself "she's pretty!". It's no surprise then that I found out she was part Filipina. She sings and dances well too - the Filipina in her really shows. When I first saw this music video a few days ago, I was telling myself "she looks familiar... oh wait. Is that..? Cool it's her!" It's good to know she has her singing career started already. Somehow I think I was drawn to Vanessa also because she reminds me a lot of the one I really like with that light and bubbly personality. Who you ask? Secret!

Damn Pain In The Leg

Yesterday, I woke up to a pain in my left leg. The pain came when I tried lifting my leg up and the front area of my left thigh would stiffen up like a cramp does. I went to a reflexologist yesterday and he did his thing but I didn't see much improvement even much later. I woke up this morning and I was surprised to feel a big improvement. I could lift my leg with only a slight nagging pain but at least most of the pain was gone. Good thing too since my house has stairs and I was finding it hard to climb yesterday.

It's my 23rd birthday today and so far nothing much has happened. Nothing really happens on my birthday except me getting older. Going out with family tonight but that's it. I guess I make a bigger fuss on other people's birthdays than my I do on my own. Cheer to being 23!

Forced WoW Vacation... again!

I just came back to playing World of Warcraft about a month ago after a forced vacation that lasted about 5 months. It sucks to find out I gave to stop playing again and this time I really don't know when I can play again. I just saw a new eye doctor for an alternative treatment my eye condition called Keratoconus. I've had it for about 5 years now and I've been wearing special hard lenses called Rigid Gas Permeables (RGP) so I could see better. My new eye dotor ordered me to stop wearing them because it and the eye rubbing the itchiness it causes are damaging my corneas. The cells aren't regenerating as fast as they should because of the interruption. So i need to stop wearing my RGP's so the corneas can heal. So since I can't see without my contacts and glasses only help minimally, I was forced to stop playing the game. I was forced to leave my in game friends once again and I'm really going to miss them. I made some new friends while I was back for that short time and it sucks to have to leave them too. I can play again once my vision gets better and I don't know when that will be. I hope it will be soon enough so I can join them and more importantly I want my vision to get better so I won't have a hard time using the computer for my blogging. Right now I'm barely getting by because of my poor vision.

Reporting Back After A Long Time

It's been a while since I last made a blog entry here. It has a lot to do with the fact that I reactivated my World of Warcraft account and started raiding with the guild I was meaning to join months ago had I not taken a break. It's good to be back around some of the old guys I used to play with and it's good to meet the new guys that weren't in the guild that collapsed during my vacation. It's pretty old news but I still have to mention that the death of the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin sucks and I wish his family well. It's a tragic incident indeed but at least he died doing what he loved.

The Best Game Ever?!!

So I was reading the World of Warcraft forums and someone mentions the game Spore as a game that could kill WoW and in fact perhaps be the best game ever. The poster said to search for it on Google Video. So, being bored and having some spare time I look for it. The video about the Spore gameplay I watched was about 35 minutes long and was still not complete but it gave me a good grasp of what the game is about. Spore is a game by Maxis and EA Games and according to Gamespot, it's coming out 3rd quarter of 2007. Basically the game allows the player to control life forms from the cellular level to the space travel aspect. You go through several stages of evolution and social interaction. It's amazing! If you have time, check out the gameplay video I watched below and prepare to be amazed!

Trying to Claim NBA Obsessed

The past few days I've been trying to claim NBA Obsessed at Technorati and I've been having trouble. I need to claim it before i can get added to the Technorati's Pinoy Top 100 Bloggers list at Yugatech.com. After looking at pretty old thread in the b5media forums about claiming blogs I found out that the other guys had problems too. But I also read that doing an embed claim could do the trick so I'm now bugging my channel editor to help me do the embed claim since I don't have the proper access to edit the code of the site. Hope it works!

Technorati's Philippine Top 100 Blogs

Reading Sasha's blog, I came across the Philippine Top 100 blogs on Technorati post of Abe from Yugatech.com. Like Sasha, I found out I would have been eligible to be on the list had they included me. I did my own inputting into Technorati and compared the rating to the list found out that NBA Obsessed has a rating of 26,236 (284 links from 94 blogs) which is #53 on the list! I congratulate myself even if I'm not on the list because I know deep inside that I could have been if only they knew.

Gormenghast

So if you've been reading my blog, by now you already know I play World of Warcraft. Well I'm having an forced extended vacation from playing that game at the moment. Before I stopped playing I was in this cool guild called The Dismal Rage (TDR). It was a big surprise that about a week after I stopped playing the guild suddenly collapsed. To make a long story short, two guilds rose up from the ashes of TDR. One was called SciFi Wasabi which is being led by the tauren druid Sakka the former leader of TDR and the other was called Gormenghast which is being led by Geordi, the coolest female orc warrior I've met. I've chosen to join Gormenghast when I get back to playing and it really sucks for me that the guild has achieved so much and I'm not around in game to take part of any of it. But the real reason why I'm posting is the picture you see above. The first time I saw the new guild name Geordi chose I was like "WTF?!!". I've been reading the our WoW realm forum and there are posts about how cool the name of the guild but a lot of guild members themselves don't know what it actually means of where it comes from. I did some light research the day I found out the name and I got a castle. What I didn't realize is that it's actually fictional one in a book. I only found out when I was roaming around a bookstore and I encountered the book you see in the picture above. At that moment I sort of felt that my guildies were trying to tell me to get the heck back to playing already like they always do, except now it's in omens. LOL!

What's Happening To My Alma Mater?!

So it's been a while since I graduated from high school but 2001 wasn't that long ago. My best friend and former high school classmate decided to give teaching a try so he applied in our old alma mater and was able to get in. He tells me a LOT has changed! Some I've seen for myself: The classrooms are now airconditioned, the school uniforms are different, the executive director is new and he used to be the dean in the School of Management in my University before he left. Even the rotonda where we used to have our flag ceremony now has a flat courtyard look with a small cage where birds and the brokeback rabbits (yeah they're all male and something fishy seems to be happening in there) stay. That's all cool but that's not the subject of my post. It's hard for alumni to see the school you came from see a change for the worse. You see the school is now implementing new methods in teaching that is supposed to be better. In fact if done well it has the chance to be better that what was used back in our day. Basically as early as grade school, the emphasis is on understanding the lesson rather than memory work Although I don't see why memory shouldn't be given importance too. It develops knowledge retention that's also an important skill in life. It was one of the reasons why Latin was taught to us in high school. Anyway, the new system has made the students soft and that's why my friend is silently disgusted. Things like "if 20% of the students fail a test you have to teach the lesson again and give a retest". Back in our day retests were like the Haleys Comet as they come once in a blue moon. I could have sworn there were many times when more than 20% of us failed. Did we get a retest? No! The students in the school are now soft! I hate to say it but it's the truth. Even dissciplinary measures have gone down the drain. You can't even shout at the students anymore without some parent coming in the next day causing havock about it. You can't even send your students to detention anymore since the parents complain "why are you detaining my child?". How are the students going to learn without a disciplinary measure that will hit them hard enough to know that what they did was wrong? Nowadays getting suspended is a mark of machismo where the kids are actually proud to get one. *sigh* What is happening to my school?!!!!

Our Filipino Education Is Not Good Enough? Bllsht!

Last Saturday I was with 3 of my friends, all high school classmates. One of them was here on vacation because he moved to Toronto and we decided to meet up with him because he's going back to Canada soon. This friend of mine finished 4 of 5 years of his Electrical and Computer Engineering course here in the University of the Philippines. Then he got the news that his family was migrating so he needed to finish his degree in Canada. I was shocked to find out that absolutely none of his units were credited by the University he's at now. So he's back at first year college taking things all over again. Apparently the Canadians don't think we Filipinos are good enough for them, coming from a 3rd world country. My friend told me they also looked down on the Indians too. It's also would have been useless for him to just finish his course here in the Philippines because he wouldn't be allowed to practice there either. I'm surprised at this attitude by the Canadians. How close minded and snobbish can they be! Now my friend is showing them that our Filipino education is indeed world class since he has a perfect average so far. His Filipino education is allowing him to breeze through the classes where all the others are failing miserably.

NBA Obsessed PR6!

So the other day while I was checking for comments in NBA Obsessed, I for some reason decided to look at the page rank measure on my Google toolbar. It normally would read 0/10 and that's what I was expecting. To my shock, which followed by a silent scream in my brain going "oh my God, oh my God, oh my God" repeatedly, it read 6/10. Finally! What is this PR thing I'm talking about? PR means page rank. Mr. Darren Rowse of Problogger.net explains it better than me in his post Google Page Rank Explained . Basically what this means for a blogger is PR makes a blog eligible for text link ads and the higher the PR the more attractive your blog will be to advertisers and sponsors. This is a great achievement for NBA Obsessed and it's proof to the power of a blog network like b5media. In other news, Sasha Manuel is also happy that one of her b5 blogs got PR6 too!

The Rondo Highlight Reel

So it's only today I really got to see what the fuss was about concerning Rajon Rondo, the point guard from the University of Kentucky who was drafted 21 overall in the 2006 draft. He was selected by the Phoenix Suns but his rights were traded to the Boston Celtics. Wow! I was amazed at what this guy can do! He does almost everything a coach would love in his point guard. He passes exceptionally well especially on the break. He's a good perimeter defender and he's doesn't seem to have any trouble getting to the basket! If only this guy had a consistent outside shot he would have been a lock as a lottery pick. As he is now, he might turn out to be one of the steals on draft day. By the way, he's #4 in the video. Though this is an NBA related post, I opted not to post it on NBA Obsessed since it's kinda old news. It's more of a personal epiphany for me. =p

The Chronicles of Narnia

So my brother Jayvee bought the compilation of all the books of the Chronicles of Narnia. I didn't touch it at first because I was reading the book Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke. I guess I just like reading these easy read meant for children books ala Harry Potter. Well I started reading the Chronicles of Narnia a few weeks ago (I'm taking long because i'm really a slow reader and I only read at night before going to bed) and I'm now reading The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Funny because I didn't start reading from book 1. I first read The Silver Chair which is the 6th of 7 books. A stand alone The Silver Chair book was lying around my dad's room so i picked it up and started reading. When I got to like it looked for the compliation and started reading from book one. Every book I've read so far is awesome. It has that Lord of the Rings feel but made easier to read (I tried reading LOTR before and i got bored because it is a kinda dragging story and much harder to read because of the heavy language used) If you haven't read The Chronicles of Narnia yet, start! That Damn Monitor

I think our computer monitor needs to be replaced the moment we can afford to get a new one. the display keeps on turning yellow and just this morning it turned red and purple on me. The temporary fix is to give it a whacking but of course temporary fixes only give temporary solutions. So the whacking needs to be re-applied!

I Lost Weight...

So, so many people have told me I lost weight. I keep thinking to myself "what am I doing that I'm losing weight NOTICEABLY?" Well, back when I was playing World of Warcraft, I used to skip eating breakfast and to be able to prepare for our Molten Core raid (yeah I played in the morning when it's evening in the US). But then I realized that it must be something else. I increased my intake of water by a hell lot since I have easy access to it here at home. Then I did some research if water had anything to do about wieght loss and I was right! Why Drinking Water Really Is The Key To Weight Loss Water rocks! I'll grab a glass of water now...

World Cup

It's World Cup time but I don't seem to care. Don't know why but I just don't. I used to love playing soccer err... football before and I did watch the World Cup back then. I used to cheer for Brazil all the time and I probably would now if it still interested me. I remember that final game in 1994 (I think) when the Italian team star Roberto Baggio missed that penalty kick and cost them the victory. Brazil won! Yay! It's kinda ironic that I don't take interest in a sport I used to like playing while i now love watching the NBA when I hated basketball when I was a kid. I still don't play basketball. I just love watching it now!

Almost 4 Months

I can't believe it's been almost 4 months already that I've been away from playing World of Warcraft. This is amazing considering I used to play the game every single day. I'm sure you're familiar with the phrase "There are only 2 sure things in life, death and taxes". In my Finance class, one of the first things we learned how to compute for taxes given certain tax rate margins. We learned from one of the basic axioms of finance that taxes bias decision making. We saw how having larger revenues can be fatal. Basically, the more you make, the more you are taxed!! Dang! This was confirmed when I read quite long ago a book on variations of Murphy's Law. Rants on Finance and CAPM

In Finance, one of the methods to measure the cost of capital of a certain project to be evaluated is to use the Capital Assets Pricing Model or CAPM. It is used to evaluate riskiness as opposed to the rate of return of a certain asset.

The CAPM equation goes as follows:

Kj= Krf + B(Km - Krf)

where:

Kj= rate of return B= the beta (measures the riskiness of the asset) Km= the market rate Krf= the risk free rate

Do not be intimidated by all this. You do not need to understand the CAPM. I just want to focus your attention to the Krf or the risk free rate. The risk free rate refers to the interest rate of government securities, more often than not, the government T-Bills (Treasury Bills)

For those who don't know, risk refers to the chance that an investment on an asset fails to give the appropriate returns or to give any at all. A basic axiom of finance in fact states "low risk, low return and high risk, high return"

Government securities are assumed to be risk free because there should be no risk at all. Since one is dealing with the government, he is assured to get returns. Now, do you really think that is a safe assumption? How can you assume such universally when in reality, most governments have a hard time paying off their debts? More so, how can you safely assume that government securities are risk free for countries that are currently experiencing fiscal crises such as the Philippines?

Perhaps one can reconcile that an investor in such government securities will get his return on investment. The question is when? I've heard stories of people who were given such securities many many years ago, some 20 years ago. Up to now they haven't gotten their returns. Doesn't that look like risk to you?

I'm really curious how the person who formulated the CAPM won a nobel prize... oh well

Egg Omelette?!!

What the hell is an egg omelette?!! I've seen this item in some restaurants and it really makes me wonder. Don't you think it's stupid? Merriam-Webster dictionary defines an omelette to be "beaten eggs cooked without stirring until set and served folded in half". In other words, it's still egg! So an egg omelette is....? Egg with egg? So why don't they just call it egg or just omelette? I finally asked a restaurant about it and they said it had mushrooms...Stupid! So call it a mushroom omelette!!! Welcome to The Babbling Introvert v 2.0. yeah I had a blog with the same name on the same domain but I deleted it since it was full of spam and stuff after not tending to it. It was my only experience in blogging which I did for fun. My friend Migoy Tensuan got me started and I'm really thankful for that experience since I now have a job as a professional blogger. All that experience blogging professionally gave me the confidence to restart the prospect of blogging on a personal site once again so here I am. I named the blog The Babbling Introvert since I talk to myself a lot. I think it's fun to start sharing these stuff to the world again. I hope you enjoy this blog.
